Sachsen is Germany’s most eastern wine region. It stretches for approximately 55 km along the river Elbe from south of Dresden to beyond Meissen and is not only a very beautiful river landscape, but it holds a richness of art, architecture and industrial culture seldom found in such a small area. The town of Dresden is called the Florence of the East, famous for the recently rebuilt cathedral, Meissen is world renowned for its porcelain manufacture and fantastic art treasures in great volume and architectural gems can be found in and around Dresden. The region can be explored on bike all along the river Elbe, using one of the old paddle steamers belonging to the world’s oldest steamship fleet, or by car along the ‘Sächsische Weinstrasse’. Whatever way you choose: The region is must to visit.
The region is characterised by a harsh continental climate with hot summers and cold winters, spring frost can threaten the flowering stage and often leads to reduced yield. Viticulture is thus restricted to carefully selected locations with south-facing slopes and favourable microclimatic conditions. Its recorded viticultural history dates from 1161 and parallels that of other wine regions, where the Church and the aristocracy were the primary medieval property owners and responsible for the development of the vineyards. During Napoleonic times, when the vineyards along the Elbe had grown to over 1500 hectares, the first viticultural school in Europe was founded in Meissen.
The region Sachsen has now a size of approximately 450 hectares, the steepest slopes are of weathered granite and gneiss, with loess or sand deposits in some of the vineyards. Sachsen produces mostly white wines (85 %), Mueller-Thurgau, Riesling and Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc) are the leading grape varieties.
Between visiting the many gems of architecture and art, the visitor will need to monitor his time to enjoy the many wine festivals around the area. The wines from Sachsen are enjoyed mostly locally and not exported to a great extend, so here you have an opportunity to taste the best wines from the area with the services of VINUM-X-TELLUS. |
