Franken is the onliest region in Germany located in Bavaria, not typically associated with wine growing. Actually, Franken is east of Frankfurt, stretching along the river Main from Aschaffenburg to Schweinfurt, including the city of Wuerzburg, founded by St. Killian. The region covers ca. 6000 ha of vineyards, mostly on the south-facing banks of the river Main. Best sites include names like Kallmuth, Centgrafenberg, Stein and many others.

Soil types include weathered, primitive rock and colored sandstone in the Spessart Hills north of Miltenberg. Shell-limestone predominates in the central district, while heavier gypsum and keuper soils are found further east, near the Steiger Forest. The climate is continental, with warm, dry summers and cold winters.

Grape varieties include Müller-Thurgau, Silvaner, and Bacchus as well as Kerner, Riesling and Spätburgunder. Famous for Franken is the bottle type Bocksbeutel, the finest Franken wines are traditionally bottled in a Bocksbeutel, a squat green or brown flagon with a round body, which lends considerable recognition value to the region's wines.

The town of Würzburg, steeped in history and of particular interest from an Irish viewpoint, is the focus point in Franken and a must to visit. The city was founded by the Irish Saint and the towns people celebrate to this day every year in July the Killian festival.
