Ahr |

The wine region Ahr is the smallest and also the most northern region in Germany. It covers a an area of just over 540 hectares, and stretches along the River Ahr for 25 km from Altenahr to Heimersheim, near the mouth of the river into the Rhein. The soil types vary from deep rich loesses in the east (near the river Rhein) to slate and volcanic stone and rocky soil in the upper valley. Most of the vines (over 90 %) are of red variety, mostly Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir).
Some of the best red wines of Germany and indeed Europe are grown in this small, unique valley with its steep terraces and towering rock formations along the winding river. Soils, rock formations and vineyard walls of dark slate grey wacke absorb and store the sun?s heat during daytime, reflecting it back to the vines at night. The result of this greenhouse effect is a Mediterranean climate with surprisingly high average temperatures. The region is a paradise for connoisseurs and gourmets with its excellent estates and restaurants. With good music and fine wines let the soul relax and enjoy.
Visitors to this area will find an amazing amount of attractions to fill their time besides the enjoyment of tasting the red wines of the Ahr. The city of Cologne with its majestic cathedral and volumes of shopping streets is just a short car- or train ride away, the village of Remagen famous for its bridge battle during the 2nd world war is very close to the Ahr joining the river Rhein. Formular I and other racing enthusiasts will find the Nuerburgring a big attraction to visit and test their driver skills. And for the lovers of hiking and biking there is an abundance of tours connecting all the villages and wine estates. Not to forget the lovers of a game of golf: within the region and a short distance away are many courses, amongst them where the German Masters are played in Koeln.
