Hardly any other winemaker in Germany has had a greater impact on the production of high-quality red wines than Werner Naekel. Selected in 2004 as -Producer of the Year- by the influential guide Gault Millau, this estate is a member of the prestigious VDP and of the Deutsches Barrique Forum.

In 1982, after a brief career as a teacher, Werner Naekel took over the family wine business. In the last 5 years alone he has won over 2 dozen national and international prizes for his work. His great Spaetburgunder Cuvées are presented side by side with the great wines of the Bordeaux region. Nowadays he is focussing on his new ventures in Portugal and South Africa, knowing that his family business is safe in the hands of his 2 daughters Dörte and Meike Naekel.

Meyer-Naekel also participates in winemaking in another Ahr valley winery, Kloster Marienthal, and has further estates in both Portugal and South Africa (see Wine Regions Douro and Stellenbosch).

If you want to find out how Meyer-Naekel produces his great wines, travel to the Ahr and meet him or his daughters. Stay in the estate's own guesthouse or in one of the excellent Hotels listed below.
And do not forget the lovely Hofgarten, where you can enjoy excellent food and find the wine you like best. Located in Dernau, in the upper valley of the River Ahr, the estate also runs the Hofgarten, an historical wine and beer restaurant, family owned for over 200 years.
