To leave nature to do its best – to keep the traditions and try the new – two philosophies followed by Hartmann Dippon, wine maker in Schlossgut Hohenbeilstein. Since roman times wine has been grown on the south-facing slopes of the castle mountain. Nowadays Hartmann Dippon exercises great care with what he has inherited from nature and tradition, without losing modern management and practical application out of his sight. On 14 hectares of vineyard, partly on steep terraces grow its excellent wines. This is documented by numerous awards and prizes, the estate is also a member of the prestigious VDP and also produces since 1994 to the rules of controlled biological methods.
Hartmann Dippon prefers to produce his red wines in wooden barrels. The wine needs this freedom to breath, the openness to develope, this will give depth and character. The estate produces mostly red wines, leading grape is Lemberger, dry in the main and still with a touch of sweetness which gives a wine style and fullness. Other red grape varieties include Trollinger, Samtrot, Muskattrollinger, all grapes very little known outside the region of Württemberg. White wines include Riesling and Silvaner.
The estate produces since 1994 completely under the rules of controlled ecological methods. Out of love to nature and responsibility for future generations, says Dippon. His wines are a mirror image of the terrain they grow on – as expected from top wines. In his cellar there are only a few steps from the modern management with tiles and stainless steel to the centuries old walls of the deep cellar holding the large wooden barrels.
Schlossgut Hohenbeilstein is one of the first estates to use the glass cork 'Vino-Lok. Its advantages are easy opening of the wine bottle without cork screw, an absolute tight seal when putting it back on as well as no more taste of cork in the wine. The glass plugs are totally neutral in respect of smell and taste. The estate is a must to visit. Located on top of the quiete village of Hohenbeilstein, it offers a great view over the northern parts of the Württemberg wine region. The castle mountain holds also a falconry, and the visitor has other endless opportunities to engage in art, culture and sport or to visit the near City of Stuttgart. |
