This estate, named after the local region Quinta da Carvalhosa, is located between Regua and Pinhao, in the heart of the wine region Duoro. It consists only of A and B sites, the best, which have already been classified by the legandary Marquês de Pombal in 1756. This was the first classification of a vineyard in the world, way before this was done for example in the Bordeaux region.

The estate is owned and managed by a trio of established German wine makers, among them Werner Näkel of the estate Meyer-Näkel in the Ahr region. Näkel has built a name for himself as one of the best red wine producers, and the wines from Quinta da Carvalhosa are no different.

On of the appeals to produce a red wine in this region has to do with the tradition that here, as much as with the Riesling in Germany, the local grapes are the key, there is no crossing or internationalisation. They grow and produce where there home was and still is. A little bit the opposite of Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvingon.

Since 2000 the Quinta is producing the two wines Campo Ardosa and Ardosino in a very traditional way in line with site and terroir. For excample, the typical Portuguese granite basins, called Lagars, are used for fermentation.
